BBG Mag: The "Big Sister" Edition

Big Sisters...how many of us have them? For a select few, our big sister is among our first heroes. They get to experience everything first, and if we're lucky, they'll teach us everything that they know!

How underrated are our awesome older sisters? If you're anything like us, you understand that sadly, most don't get the recognition that they truly deserve.

That is why Beautiful Black Girl Magazine is making this edition all about those sibling role models in our lives. We asked you all what makes the following beauties such great big sisters, and you delivered in a big way.

Now, we invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. When it's over, please me sure to encourage these young ladies to remain just the way that they are....beautifully amazing!

Katia is the best big sister she's basically like Rihannas second mother. From the day Rihanna was born, Katia has always watched over her and wanted to help in any ways she could. She would feed her, change diapers, even put Rihanna to sleep. Now that they are older, and in school the bond has just grown stronger. Katia is super protective of her little sister... you mess with Rihanna you mess with her. She helps Rihanna with homework, the best she can. She also tries her hardest to help keep her little sister out of trouble. I am so proud of Katia she is an awesome Big sister.

Shi'Terra is a great big sister because she makes sure her little sis is great in all aspects.She is a soon to be high school graduate, mentor for her peers, straight A student, and her little sis looks up to her for all her accomplishments...She's a strutter, plays soft ball, works, and is enrolled in college courses.She is the dopest seventeen year old, that I know!

Raegan Friday is the 12 year old big sister to 10 year old Skylar Friday. You would think that because they are so close in age, that there would be a little jealousy from her, but there is not. Raegan is always willing to assist Skylar with everything from homework to making friends. Even though Skylar is sometimes resistant to receive it, Rae still offers. I love when I come home and I watch them choreograph dances together and Rae (as she is affectionately known) being the better dancer, doesn't get angry when Skylar doesn't get it. When I fuss about their rooms not being clean, she cleans her room first, then goes to help her little sister clean, so they can go play.I won't say that they have a perfect relationship but the little acts of kindness outweigh the bad. I teach them that friends will come and go but sisters are forever.

Jada is actually our middle child out of three children.She has an older brother as well as a little sister. Jada is an amazing sister for so many reasons.Our oldest. whose name is Jaylen, has cerebral palsy and Jada always includes him in everything. At the age of two, she learned how to tube feed him, and she has been helping me care for him ever since.She also helps with her little sister.I love the fact that when they;re getting on the bus in the mornings, she always makes sure her sister gets on before she does.She is truly a blessing. and I am happy to call her my daughter.

I believe Serenity Summers is a great big sister to her little brother Cruize Summers Jr, because she helps him when he needs assistance with certain things. For instance, when it's time to get dressed, because he's still learning, she helps him put on his clothes. Also she helps him with potty training. He doesn't even tell me he has to go to the bathroom, he tells his big sister! She also defends him and takes up for him. They play with each, laugh about stuff that I don't even understand. She loves her brother!

Janya Ashby was born to Jeffery Ashby and Lakeshia Abraham on April 15, 2003. Since birth, her dad and I knew that she was a special gift. At the age of three, she followed my footsteps, and became a liturgical praise dancer. Since then, she has accomplished many things. Janya writes and performs monologues, she is a Disney cast member, a dancer, captain of the volley ball team at N.W.M., honor student, Spanish interpreter, president of the Back off Bully (B.O.B) program, and also a part of the young people's department at Rockhill A.M.E. Church. Janya has a total of four sisters and two brothers...and I personally believe that she is setting a great example for all of them. Her brother and sister, whom resides with her, count on her for homework help, and on the weekends, she not only teaches them praise dances, but also our neighbors! In addition, she teaches them the art of public speaking. Janya will always let you know that she is a leader, and not a follower...she will also let you know that she is the "Queen." Her life's quote is simple, yet powerful: "Through GOd, any and everything is possible!"

Tyana is smart, patient, and is everyone's little sweetheart. She's has been a Terrific Kid through the entire school year. As we all know, being a big sister isn't easy. However she does it well, and almost effortlessly. From choosing which shoes matches their outfits each morning. To helping Jaylen with homework afterschool.

I think that Kenadzha is a good big sister because she gives me good advice, she helps me stay out of trouble,she supports me with everything that i wanna do,she cares about me.She always makes me laugh when im sad,she helps me out with any problems that i have, she's the bestest sister anyone can have, she's good company she sets the perfect example for me by getting good grades and staying out of trouble.

She is very respectful and is a very independent kid. I couldn't ask for a better child to set the mark for my other daughters.

Armani is not only a great big sister, but also an amazing daughter. She is very helpful and independent. She enjoys doing things with her siblings and helping them learn new things. Armani likes to get her hair and nails done and enjoys life to the fullest.
